Treat the high traffic areas of your lawn like a sports field or golf course
Most lawns can do OK without regular aeration if they don't have high traffic and clay soil. The combination of those two will result in soil compaction and poor turf quality. Core aerating clay soil achieves only short term improvement in turf health as it doesn't change the poor quality of the soil.
We don't core aerate, because we don't want to come back every year.
